My time in Freiburg was awesome. Anyone who has the chance to study at Albert-Ludwigs should take it. If you're going to be in Germany for a while, get the Bahn Card- it gives you half off rail travel anywhere in Germany, and if you get the 'Railplus' feature that gives 25% of on selected european countries. The Bahn Card is worth every Mark! (There is a special student rate)

People at ALU have been some of the friendliest most helpful I have ever met. As an international student, it can be intimidating to apply for a university abroad, but both the administrators and my program coordinator were incredibly friendly and helpful.
The programs are rigorous and they expect you to be responsible and to be independent. However, they also offer a lot of freedom and allow you the ability to tailor your studies in whatever way you want.

Watch the exchange rate. Don't plan on buying too many articles of clothing or furniture. Bring as much stuff with you that you can.

Food from supermarkets is very good value. Obviously, i was making international calls, which i don't do at home. Travel was expensive as i wasn't there for long enough for it to be worth getting a railcard.
