My roommate didn't speak english so this was the best factor in helping me learn Arabic. We watched Soap opera and cartoons in Arabic and she would try to explain. I helped her with her english and she with my arabic. Also as a girl you tend to pick up little things automatically when you date some one from the area. And as a girl its not hard to get involved with the male population in the area. So 3 days after I arrived I found myself dating one of the guys in the club I had joined. were still great friends.

You will always spend more traveling than anything because there so much more to see than when your at home. Besides there are usually specials here in the US whereas in Egypt they haven't quite grasped this concept.

Commentaire personnel
In Cairo, well all of Egypt people overall have a very relaxed attitude toward academics. Its nothing like America you aren't rushed to do anything. Most of your instructor will take the time to have lunch with you dinner, they go to the coffee bars with you . Its very relaxed which is the part I loved the most. If you had a paper due and didn't finish it most of them would usually extend the date because they know there so much to do in a short amount of time so they take this into consideration. That you don't come half way across the world to be stuck in a class room.

Si j'avais su
they don't tell you about the constant presence of the the military armed gaurds that you have to deal with every day. They don't tell you about the random searches. Also it was sort of a challenge to with people who had very negative views of America. As a political science major and a middle east specialist its hard to deal with the the disenting opinion because they way I figured it is... I'm not the person you should be mad at because I made the attempt to understand you culture and ways its the people who don't branch out and stay in their bubble that I have aproblem with as well as you do. You will be constantly challenged daily by the isuues facing people who can't stand you for a various reasons. Its hard and there are down periods but they try to cover this in oreintation.

Good school, great enviroment.. but its not for everyone. you have to already have a back bone especially if your a women and be able to tolerate just about anything because its crazy some times. There are local enviroment issues such has harrrasment and filth that it takes time getting use to. you can walk down the street and see at least 5 dead cats or rodents and no one disposes of these things.. So you have to get use to being in a 3rd world country. Bugs are a big reality as well as nasty men on the street groping you.. But with all that going on you still manage to have a great time.

Most helpful thing I could suggest is, take some pepper spray, because it will deter the vagabonds... Never ever walk the streets alone at night. Always have a boy crew who you hang out with ragularly in the city and especially in Zamalek if you choose to live inthe dorms, because this will be your saving grace because most men will think that they are you cousins or husband or what ever and they will not approach you. People don't steal there so you don't have to worry about theft. traveling just be constantly aware of your surrounding at all times. You have to keep you head about your self, it is important never to be too offensive. I would suggest if you drink to do it at some ones home instead of in public because you need your full sense and faculties at all times to even get a cab or you may end up in the dessert some where... well maybe not that drastic but you get the point. Your arrival into Cairo is an adventure unto itself, the airport smells like livestock so be prepared to be sick. After a few weeks you get use to the smell and don't notice it. My group of friends coinded the phase " the Cairo stench" whcih consists of dead carass, garbage and of course the smells of the Nile... and just the general filth. The biggest suggestion I can give is take clothes you don't want to wear ever again because Mom will burn them when you get home. The smell of Cairo tends to stay with you even when you get back. Your fiends and family will notice it immediatly. Til this very day a good friend of mine who I met in Cario, he's mother still ask what in the world were you guys doing over there rolling around with the animals.. She threw all his clothes away as did my mother as did all the other the mothers... So believe me when I tell you the stench sticks, in your hair and pores. It takes about a week to get rid of it. Good Luck and have fun!

Where the Casino are located also. There is also a few great night spots in Mahandessen but they are sort of underground. So you got meet the right people.

Logement
Type de logement: Dormatory
Organisé par: Université d'accueil
Si j'y retournais je choisirais: Appartement/maison
Pourquoi?
More freedom. Women and Men aren't allowed to mix so as an american this was difficult. I prefer a more realistic in eviroment wheree both sexes have to interact with one another.

My only problem with my living arrangements other than you couldn't have your friends to your room if they were male... was my roommate who was 18 and at the time I was 24. I think they should pair people up according to there age and experience. It was difficult living with someone so young who had never been exposed to anything in life really. She was from Sudan and had a very strict family but basically lost her mind because she was free to go out and do what ever as long as she was back by crufew. I loved AUC but I think that living out in the city is better than being in the dorms.
