Spanish very friendly and accomodating, never felt intimidated and felt extremely fluent after my year in Barcelona. I spoke basic spanish (castillian) on my arrival, but improved a lot during my stay. On the street and between friends, people speak catalan, but they didn't mind switching when the "foreigners" were present. Fun, because I also got to learn (at least understand) some catalan.

Spanish is the national language of Spain, however in Barcelona you are equally likely to be spoken to in Catalan, which to the untrained ear sounds like an alien language. Most people can at least speak rudimentary English, so language should not pose any issue.

esade offers a lot of courses in english too but in general at least trying to do everything in spanish is worth it (catalan would be nice as well but is not necessary)
