I found it necesary to at least have language skills in Castillano. Catalán is not necesary, but if you learn a few phrases it can be helpful in meeting locals.

I learnt a lot, both in my academic circle and in the house. Both were close groups of friends, and enabled all its members to learn very rapidly.

all course descriptions for CEMS cources are in english, but the courses are mainly taught in Spanish, which was a surprise, but also a challenge.

Althought Castilan is widely spoken they are a LOT of foreigners in BCN and its up to you wheter you want to speak English, French or any other language than Spanish. I made my efforts to interact with Spaniards.
