My personal best cafe is Café Babel in the quarter of Gros with very nice people working there and free Internet access. For nightlife almost any bar in the Old Town and "Reyes Católicos" is recommendable, my personal favorite to have a drink is the bar "Uda Berri".

Personal spending habits
I spent more for calls than at home because communication costs in Spain are higher than in Germany, in particular in short calls (> 1min). Regarding housing costs San Sebastián is one of the most expensive cities in Spain but it's easy to find a place.

For the first couple of months it was easy to get by without making too much effort, but once i did start making an effort (to speak to the south american contingent, or the spanish students) i found that my standard improved more.
