Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
The on campus life allows exchange students to really get a feel of the people there. I met 5 of my best friends from living on Res, and I am going back to see them soon!

The flats were cleaned once every 6 weeks or so, so the rest of the time, all of the flatmates were responsible for cleaning...which didn't happen very often. The RAs attempted to get us to keep the flats clean with a duties delegation list, but no one in my flat stuck to it. Other flats, however, were spotless. I think it was just the people that I lived with.
The accomodations office was very helpful in any matters that I needed resolved.

I loved to go to the Victory on Thursday nights (buy one get one free!), Fridays (beautiful view and something to do for everyone), and Murphy's (a great bar with live music every night. The Down Under Bar was also a great place to go just to dance, have fun, and meet "interesting" guys.

Languages
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
Since I speak English and it is the Australian national language, I had no problems communicating. In the very beginning, it took a little while to understand the accent and slang, but that didn't take long to get used to.

Personal spending habits
I spent more on nightlife because I went out a lot more than I normal would at home. I spent less on accomodation just because of the great exchange rate for the American dollar.

Overall
I wish I had known...
Don't have your work visa mailed to you. Wait in line to get it processed that day so that it doesn't get lost (along with your passport) at the Post.

Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
I love Griffith because of the amazing personal experience I had. I would definitely recommend to anyone that they go on exchange there. Brisbane is an amazing city as well, and it was great that I had such easy access to it.

During my experience abroad, I ...
(1) Never – (4) A lot
Became familiar with another culture
Met people from other countries
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies & career
Final comments
The flights (I had four each way) can get really tiring and make a person go insane. I recommend taking one or two Tylenol PM to help you sleep on the long flights. I also recommend getting a massage in the Auckland airport (if you have a layover there) - it was the most amazing experience ever! Drink lots of water too!

Academic
Course recommendations
Coming from the US, the class set up was a little strange to get used to (everything is due at once at the end of the semester, and you don't spend as much time in class). The courses also were very integrated to mix different subjects into the course, which is great, but is different from the US way of having strict single subject content for most courses.

Personal comments
Don't slack off in the beginning because you have nothing to do until the last 6 weeks. I wish I would have kept up with my studies all along so that I wasn't so swamped at the end.
