Languages
Language of instruction: Russian
Was learning Russian a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Russian

My level before: At ease in most situations
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Language difficulties

Personal comments
I went to Russia because I study Russian - so learning the language was what I came for. Being in a country for 3 months, meeting local people in the streets really improves your language skills.

Personal spending habits
I spent more on the phone cause I regularly phoned to The Netherlands. Inside Russia, the phone would be as expensive as a local call within The Netherlands. Overall, life was cheaper that in Holland.

Personal comments
In '95 there were almost no cash dispensers in Russia (there was 1 in St. Petersburg and 2 in Moscow). When I returned in '98, the situation had inproved greatly. It is now not too difficult to get money from home, as long as you stay in the main cities.

Academic
Course recommendations
Getting to know the country was for both the teachers as for us the most important thing during this course. So even some fellow-students who went to Wladiwostok for 3 weeks graduated (ok, they got a B instead of an A).

The Hermitage museum is the best! Especially with your Russian student's pass - entrance fee: $0.05! If you can travel, do so! I had a great time visiting Moscow and Kazan' by train. The Russian railway system is one of the best in Europe.

Housing
Type of housing: hotel for non-russian students
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
That would be the best way to explore the language, culture and country.
