I went to a privat language school twice a week á 3 hours, beside the university. Hungarian is very difficult to learn, but at the end of the semester I felt I was quite good( have ofcourse forgot a lot by now).Most of the young educated people talked english, but in shops most of the people didn't speak English.

At university it was very easy to communicate in English or German, outside it was rahter difficult when you are not able to speak Hungarian.
