I wish I had known...
Since the founding of the university in the 19th century the surrounding area has gone "bad" and is home to "projects", ie housing for poor and socially disadvantraged people like African Americans and drug dealers. However, the situation is now improving again.

This university is only 10-15 minutes from downtown Chicago and there is a subway (or "L", Elevated train) stop right on campus.
