Housing
Type of housing: convent
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: same place was fine
Why?
The accomodations were excellent for stundents. It was very clean, comfortable and very Parisian! The location was at the quartier latin, a hub for French intellectual students. It was exactly what I was looking for.

Of course, the museums, such as the Louvre. There is no such thing as boredom in Paris, there is always something to do and something spactacular to see.

I wish I had known...
That a summer program really is not long enough. I think a year or semester would have sufficed.

Personal recommendation
There were more social activities than academic, which I think is justified given the short duration. It is quite expensive. Perhaps, I would have gone through a community college as opposed to a major university, in order to curb fees and expenses.

Final comments
Everybody stereotypes the Parisians as cold and nasty people. I found them to be quite the opposite. I think, if it is obvious you are struggling with their language, they greatly appreciate it. In fact, I received many comments and praise for my handle of the French language. Lastly, do not get ripped off by the taxi drivers! It is so easy for this to happen! Find out from a local how much it usually costs.

Academic
Course recommendations
The representation of students from over a hundred countries was breathtaking and quite interesting, indeed. However, since it was a summer course, there really was no interaction at all with native Parisian students. I did not have the opportunity to practice my French with many natives.

A summer abroad program is not enough. It merely whetted my appetite. Striving for more, I set off for my own wondrous journey throughout France and the rest of Europe. A few years later, I came back to do a work exchange program in London. Now that I am finally finished, I am interested in pursuing German, by working in Zurich, hopefully, in a field geared towards social change.

If the program had been geared more towards integrating foreign students with native Parisians, then I think that we would have better opportunities to achieve a fluency in French. It is difficult communicating with those who are struggling and grappling with the language as well. The reason I still feel comfortable with the language is through friends whom I practice with (not met through the program.)

Other sources of funding:
Personal savings
Work opportunities:

Personal spending habits
Nightlife and telephone bills really caught up with me in the end. Since one is in a new, exciting, vibrant city, nightlife is important. Also, since I was not working in Paris, I had no extra income. Travel, in general, is cheaper in Europe and the opportunities are greater. Food did not amount to much since our facilities came equipped with a kitchen, a definate plus when considering longer-term accomodations.

Phone Cards! It saves so much money, but shop around for them first and try to find the best rates possible. Also, buying metro tickets in bulk, such as a carnet or monthly pass, as opposed to singe tickets.
