Academic
Course recommendations
All the courses are originally in Chinese and course content seems to be limited to brief definitions and translations into English( as a foreign student you get to sit in and write three line long defintiions for Inco terms that should be just a line) for the Chinese students- I hope they had other courses that gave more specialised infromation to their chinese students.

Personal comments
Be prepared for a lot of reading material, the teachign methods are much different as they tend to read and regurgitate, no opinions or explanations needed, a bit strange to adjust to, plus the teachers arent so confident in ENglish either,s read your tax reports and know your basics before you come to class.

Mix, talk and communictae with everyone you can, the chinese wnat to talk so you might as well join them yet stay on your toes for the overly-inquistive ones. I had friends in the market, I smiled at students, made some very good friends, spoke to almost every taxi drtiver when I had the chance, and hung out a lot still, you'll learna lot the more you move. The int.office speaks english so no problems there, beginner chinese courses are in english, intermediate - half in half or like my teacher fully in chinese. Its one of the best places to learn the language as it isnt as developed as the larger cities, with less foreigners and less to do, hence you become a local in a few weeks too.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Its much cheaper to rent an apartment outside the campus, as transportation isn't too expensive and if you'd prefer a bit more privacy.

At750 yuan per month for a self- contained room(bathroom, sink, hot plate); by European standards it was okay, but on a shoe string in China it was a tad bit too expensive as in the city with the right contacts and agents you can get a two bedroom flat at a very nice location (far away from school). Beats the aim of student accomodation (price), yet on campus we foreign students lived together on the same floor and had a blast.

Wu yue Hua- to the taxi driver( The Mayflower) is the base to meet othere froeigners in the city, with less than a thousand ( a pretty small number for China). It is half owned by a Canadian and is one of the trendiest amongst the locals, yet you might want to spread your wings and got o somewhere much laid back and cool- Hotel california, Denver bar fit into this category. Felix for a loud night(not too good but huge)
