I wish I had known...
Nothing in special. It would not have been so exciting if I had known in advance what I was about to learn and experience.

Juniata College is a small liberal arts college located in the middle of nowhere. There are only two or three bars and one cinema and the closest bigger town is ar 45 minutes by car. However, you could have the time of your life with your international friends (including US students of course!), getting to have very close relationships with them. They will become friends for life. Academically it offers you all the means you could dream about. Juniata has very nice traditions (mountain day, mud volleyball, etc) that will make you feel part of it progressively. After you graduate, Juniata will continue to be a part of your life.

If you do not want to get out of Huntingdon, don´t miss Boxer´s, the reunion bar. It has excellent burgers and cheese-steaks. Tuesday nights are perfect to go out to the cinema (it is cheaper on tuesdays) and the to have chiken wings with a good cider in Boxer´s. Thursdays you will be able to sing bamboleiro at AJ´s karaoke...
But it is also very interesting to travel and very easy and cheap thanks to JC clubs. You can go skiing, or visit Canada with the french club, or Boston and Harvard University with the Model UN Club and a large etcetera. Make sure you don´t leave any homework or papers to do during spring/fall/thanksgiving breaks. Juniata is completely empty these days. You can always go visit you roommate family!
Last thing: discover the planetarium before leaving!!

My accomodation and Food was paid for by the leaving student at Leeds. I sent a fourtune on Phone calls, long distance is a joke and so were calls home- you have to shop around for a calling card.
I travelled a lot more than I would do at home so I spent a heap more but it was well worth it.

I was lucky to have my major costs covered by the exchange student. As Huntingdon is out of the way and there is no public transport except for the train getting about was difficult. The train is expensive and takes a long time. Flying is big time expensive as State College is so small.
If I was here for anylonger I might have looked at buying a car as gas is so cheap. Shop around for a phone card, many have cheap minute rates but high connection fees.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Lack of privacy from sharing a room, but as a year exchange it is fine and helps you to make friends.

Personal comments
Most rooms were shared and not very large. There is some great off campus housing but it is exclusively reserved for home students. A shame as most internationals are used to being in private accomodation and it is limiting to go back to having to share. On the good side it means you have things like a TV, Fridge and microwave as all US students come with these.

Good idea if you want a change from a big town/ Uni. You will make some good friends and be well taken care off. Great oppurtunity to make contacts as most students here are off to Law or medical school!.

I travelled over Xmas on the train with an East Coast Rail pass. Amtrack trains are often late but you meet some interesting people, see the best of the country and cover a huge distance. The best views were seen from the train from Montreal- NYC.

This place has an amazing science program. Teaching is in small groups the most I had in a class was about 30 and that was most unusual. I took many different classes including Politics and History. There is a world class Pottery professor, and a state of the art science center to open in 2002. There is great computer technology and assitance is easy to come by. If you have trouble in a class you can get a tutor at no cost to you.
