Travel was cheap because of the short distances between so many different and diverse destinations. Accomodation was somewhat higher than my home in Oklahoma, but about the same as where I live now in Atlanta.

Personal comments
Buy a used bike for warmer weather to get around town. When colder, buy a Montatskarte from the Tabak stores and stay on the busses and Strassenbahns where it is much warmer.

Try and learn the language. You will find that the dialect is a lot different from classromm German, but it is worth the effort.

Course recommendations
Do a lot of courses. Otherwise you will be bored. As an exchange student you are not under that much pressure so it is a good idea to pick up something completely new for your spare time like a new language.

the system of ects credits was never really properly explained to me at the beginning so I wasn't sure how many courses to take, I just had to figure it out myself.

I organized a lot by myself with people met up there. We often went to private parties and parties organized for Erasmus. A very cheap and good place where to eat, even if surely not that healthy, was the "Drei goldenen Kugeln". I remember a disco, but mainly a kind of disco pub, named the "Three Monkeys", and an other one... but I can't remember how's that called! :p!

If you are thinking of coming to Graz, then do so because: 1.you want to visit/get to know central europe and Graz is a good base. 2. you are fascinated by provincial Austria 3.you love hiking in the mountains. Don't come to Graz if you want your year abroad to be 1 terribly exciting 2 an intellectual/cultural/social education. If you want the latter, go to Vienna.
