I would recommend Contemporary Australia for international students. It was a great way to learn about Australia, and meet other international students. The course was relatively easy, and Jeff Jarvis the instructor was awesome. Other then that I can't say I did very well in my other classes. It was my own fault because I always seemed to let my social life take priority over my academic one! There is always something to do, and since its not every day that you get to go to Australia I wanted to have as much fun as I could. If I went back I would try to do better in my classes as it is very expensive to study there.

We werent assesed much throughout the semester. Your grades mostly depend on assesment at the very end. Thats something that Im not used to. I don't want to blame the University though, because its my own fault that I put everything off until the end.

I wish I had known...
I decided to study after I had already been in Australia for over 17 months and therefore I was quite familiar with the culture and people here. I also had enough time and help to research any information that I needed before I enrolled. I knew all I needed and never came across anything crucial that directly influenced me in any way that I did not know before enrolling. Crowder College and College of the Ozarks that I attended in the United States both had well-prepared, informative booklets which I received before enrolling. I found all the information in these booklets. I also made myself familiar with the environment around the schools before committing, so I was not surprised later at all. Before I left my home country, Czech Republic, when I was 17 year old I knew that things are not going to be easy and made sure that I always checked everything and did enough research before committing to anything.

Personal recommendation
I believe that Monash University is the best one in my academic career so far. I think that the academic standard is very high and the lecturers and professors have a genuine interest in helping the students to reach their goals. The life on campus is well organized and I am sure that people that live on campus feel the very homey atmosphere, which makes it easy for them to fulfil their academic commitments. I was very pleased with my decision to enrol to Monash University and continue my education here. The tourism program fulfilled my dream to study what I am genuinely interested in and made me enjoy school more then I ever enjoyed it before. I would recommend this institution to any one who likes to receive great education while having a great time in a lovely, warm climate.

Final comments
As I already mentioned, I definitely recommend this university to all people that are interested in good education. On top of the fact that this is a university with a great reputation, it is also in a great location. Melbourne lies at the top of Port Phillip Bay, which offers, great opportunities to wind surf, dive, swim or just lie on the beach. Bells beach and other good surfing destinations are only a short drive away as well. Food and wine lovers would only welcome the close location of Yarra Valley that offers the best wines in Australia. Melbourne itself is a great entertainment city and one can find just about anything in it from good theatres, restaurants, good night clubs to artificial climbing walls. I also have to mention that Mt. Bulla that can satisfy skiers’ and snowboarders’ dreams is only 2 hours drive away from Melbourne. I can hardly think of any university in a better location. Find out for yourself…

PLT 1120 - Politics of Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll is GREAT!! THe teacher is so awesome - he's a down to earth profesor who can really relate to student and the course material is very interesting!! Tapesty was also a wonderful art class, I took this at another campus but it was well worth it!! SCI 1010 - How Science Works, is not a very interesting class and alot of papers are required! AUS 1060- Contempory AUstralia is a must for all international students. YOu learn about the history of AUstralia as well as current day media events. IT really puts you in touch with your surroundings!! THe profesors are great - if you get a chance have a drink with Jeff Jarvis - hes a great man!

Take one of the courses offered to just international students. I took Comtemporary Australia, which not only taught me about the current issues in Australia, but it also helps to remain in contact with the other internationals. Plus, it gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about what is going on in Australia at that time, or why things are the way they are. I also really enjoyed my politics course, PLT 1120, Sex, Drugs and Rock n' Roll.

It took some adjusting to. I am used to getting assessed more often through out the course. So I wasn't really prepared to only have one major paper and exam consist of my grade. If they had some smaller assignement during the semester it would have helped me to stay with the material and check what I did not understand, or missed.

Monash has great university life and great academic courses. The facilities are also constantly being updated and improved. Depending on your course, there are different levels of tutor and lecturer ability.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
On campus accommodations are expensive. Secondly, I like to choose the place I'll be living in. I don't mind searching for them and I can decide how much I am willing to pay for it.

It is generally easy to find accommodations around the university. The on campus accommodation was a brand new apartment block and they provided a washer and dryer in every apartment which is good. The rooms a a little cramped since I'm used to bigger rooms but it is sufficient. It also has a kitchen. However, the rent is pretty high at about AU500 a month. I rented a unit near the university with a bunch of friends and that only costed me about half that price. I had a bigger room but no washer and dryer. However, the place I rented was really close to a laundromat. Pretty convenient.
