The Austrian rail network offers a Vorteils card which costs around 20 Euros and gives 50% off rail. Salzburg is also in a great location because it is serviced by all major trains on the Munich-Vienna lines.

If you are going in the second semester only (as I did) make sure to enroll to as many language classes as possible in the first semester (ask your university for guidance).

Final comments
In the summer make sure to visit all the lakes surrounding Salzburg. Also although it is pricey to travel around in Austria, Salzburg is only 5 minutes away from Germany, where train travel costs next to nothing - make sure to travel around Bavaria throughly.

Overall
University of Salzburg is the largest in the region, with over 18.000 students. The staff is very supportive and helpful, especially for international students. The classes are very good,  small and interactive. The teaching is very research-oriented, so if you are looking to develop a career in research, this is the right university for you.
