Housing
Type of housing: also provided stipends for independent housing
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
The homestay is not optional in the program, but it is only required for 6 weeks of the semester. SIT is an experiential learning program. So we were accomodated based on what/where we were studying. We went to the national park cabins, we stayed in a hostel for a few days, we camped when we went on outdoor expeditions.
I think that the homestay was most valuable because I got to practice the native language (Shona) and learn about family/daily living. Living my family helped me to understand their perspectives and their culture because the family is the basic unit in society where culture is taught. People learn how to act from their family. Living with my family helped me to integrate much faster than when I didn't have a family to bond with while travelling.

Personal comments
Accomodation is comfortable. In the family situations, we had our own beds and often our own bedrooms. When we were camping, we had tents and sleeping bags, food and fire. The national park cabins were designed for international European tourists so they were nice. SIT did not put us in any accomodations that were uncomfortable, cramped, or unsanitary. They do what they can to ensure our comfort to a reasonable extent.

Personal comments
There's a cafe on Samora Machel right down the street from the school where we used to stop off for a quick bite. But I usually ate at home because my family was so cool that I wanted to get to know them better.

Overall
I wish I had known...
I wish that I knew how to handle being an extreme object of interest (commodity even) because of my American nationality. I didn't know how to handle that, but I managed.

In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
I highly reccommend SIT for people who want to step outside of their own personal experience to understand a different way of living. It's for the adventurous and those who would like to believe in their courageousness. I was able to write, choreograph and produce my own dance performance for my independent study project and I learned a lot about my strengths and my areas for improvement. I faced many of my fears on a daily basis.

Advanced my studies & career
Final comments
It's a pod program where the school brings 12-40 students to a country and schedules the full seminar with guest lecturers and independent projects. My program had 12 students, two young (early twenties) language instructors and two middle aged academic directors. Like any situation it was important to use these support people as resources to find what you like. We had lots of fun and interesting things built into our schedule and lots of independent time as well. Personally, I most enjoyeds spending time with my new family and I spent some time bonding with those in the program.

Academic
Course recommendations
The classes are all required, so take them. Study hard because the Academic Directors are personally invested in your success. Seek help from your family on your Shona homework.

Personal comments
This was an Arts and Social Change Seminar, but the seminar was more about history and contemporary culture seminar. Although history and contemporary culture are the foundation of arts and social change, the seminar could be reevaluated to make the theme more central and less marginal.

The language instruction was excellent. We learned "Survival Shona": situational language phrases based on what students encountered in their daily intereactions. Our teachers at times catered our lessons and exams to our immediate questions and problems we had in our daily communications

Personal spending habits
We took advantage of the depressed economy in Zimbabwe. The exchange rate of the US Dollar to the Zimbabwean Dollar was 1:50 at the time I was there (Fall 2000). Now it's 1:100 and things like hostel rooms were going from 700 Zimbabwean dollars per week.
