Personal comments
The accomodation was basic as China was a poor country at the time. The foreign student's building reflected aspects such as daily drills, lack of efficiency, routines incomprehensible to non-communist Chinese which were unconfortable, yet instructive.
On the logistic side, food, distribution of (warm) water and distance from the city center were bad.

Languages
Language of instruction: Chinese
Was learning Chinese a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Chinese
How much did you improve your Chinese?
My level before: Basic phrases
My level after: At ease in most situations
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
I learned the language mainly by talking to people outside the university and self study and practice rather than from the teachers in the university. The teaching methods are based on repetition and learning-by-heart rather than creative construction.

Final comments
If you want to study in China I strongly recommend going to a local university, not to the well-known institutions in Beijing or Shanghai, since they are less used to foreigners and hence gives them a better opportunity to get a grasp of how the country really functions.
