Being immersed in a language is the best way to learn it, and in going to Japan, I found that I was in at the deep end, but with time, found my way, and grew to love it.

I would really advise you to go there, I found it easy to make friend with Japanese people and so, I found my Japanese improve. You have to take the initiative though, you are in a foreign country and can't expect things to fall into your lap

Final comments
I you have a month off, and are aware of it before going, you might want to look into getting a month long Shinkansen (bullet train) pass, which can only be bought outside Japan.
