Having had studied for 4 years Spanish in highschool , when I arrived, I did understand much of what was being said. But the big problem was tot try to express myself. Hopefully, I lived with Spanish speakers and did not meet any French-speakers , which "condemed" me to speak it at all moments of the day. After a few months, thanks to these 2 factors and the classes being carried out in Spanish, I got much at ease in this language. It has been a wonderful experience to learn a language in this way.

Personal spending habits
Food is much cheaper in Sapin and I do not cook complicated menus, so much of a saving was done. Since I diddn't have a fixed phone, I tried to use this way of communication the less I could, and not becomong addicted to a mobile phone. For accomodation, since in Belgium I still do live with my family, I do not have any expenses. For nightlife, this is a good way to spending nights after sutdying with new friends, and part of Madrid's charm is it's nightlife! I also did feeel more relaxed in Sapin, which meant I "allowed" myself to have some fun. For travel, I had to use this opportunity to discover little by little the country.

Personal comments
As in any other European coutry, travelling by train is very expensive;just stick to buses! Otherwise Spain is a country with a good price-quality realtionship, so it sin't much of a finacially problematic country.

Academic
Course recommendations
The educational system in Spain sitll being quite "ineffective", the best is just to take the courses that seem the most attractive and interesting for yourself.

Personal comments
Often in Sapin students only have half- days, meaning that their study takes much more time then necessary, so, why not put more hours per week and less years? Also, the lack of effectiveness in the educational system results in Science students not having much opportunity to do labs.

The 2 best areas in Madrid must certainly be Lavapiès,which is the immigrant's area with splendid Middle-Eastern and Latin American bars, and the one of La Latina, which has a unique realxed party atmosphere with lots of outdoor amateur and professional concerts. The architecture of the houses and the relatively scarce traffic in these 2 areas favours also a night out in them.
