There´s almost no other opportunity to live in lisboa as a foreign student.

All the students had to find their accommodation independently - which wasn´t that easy, because nobody had the knowledge in the foreign language portuguese at the moment of arriving in lisbon. There were no special student-apartments on the campus or help from the university.

many interesting spots (see e. g. the lonely planet tips); my favourite: "Lux" (club-atmosphere with great view over the river tejo)

Don´t expect too much from the courses (although I heard that business classes are quiet good at the University Nova and there are the better equipped Biblioteca Nacional and Gulbenkian-Foundation). People, life and culture are really interesting and not to be missed!

If you want to get to know to a very special country which lives to some extension in the past and which has to struggle with the modern times, theres´s no better way to experience it. Travelling in Portugal (there are good and cheap possibilities by bus or train) is really a adventure.

My suggestion - even there´s no way in the near future to change it: Do away with the old school system, more modern and flexible themes and courses and better equipment (but in the end this will fail because of the lack of money).

The university offered a language course from the beginning of the academic year on, but was totally overrun with the students from abroad. Classes with 40 or more people made the language courses unmotivating and unefficient.

Surprisingly, costs in lisboa were comparable to those in munich (where standard of living is quiet high). I spent a lot of money for telephone costs, because I had to buy a mobile one and rates to Germany were high (there didn´t exist a telephone from the local Telecom in my flat). Most goods had almost the same price as the ones in Germany - or were even more expensive.

Transfering money to an account at a bank in Portugal can be quiet expensive! A cost-saving way could be the use of a credit-card/Euro-card.
