Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Because I was able to live with my friends and to have my own time and space. Although it would have been good to live with a family or italians as I would have learnt the language better.

Personal comments
The accomodation that we found was very good. It was in a pleasant area on a main bus route, and the house was big, clean and contained full facilities.

Expenses
Main source of funding:
An ERASMUS grant
Other sources of funding:
Family
Work opportunities:
I didn't want/need to work
Personal spending habits
I tried to save for other activities by budgeting on food. I hardly used the telephone at all as most of my calls were incoming. Accomodation cost the same as in England in my previous house. Nightlife cost more because we went out alot although the average nightly cost of going out was cheaper than in England. Travel cost more because we took the opportunity to travel to other parts of Italy.

Academic
Course recommendations
There needs to be more information given from the home university on courses, as we had huge problems at the beginning of term as neither the home or host university appeared to be in coordination with one another.

Languages
Language of instruction: Italian
Was learning Italian a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Italian
How much did you improve your Italian?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: At ease in most situations
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
My Italian language skills did not improve all that much as most of my friends were English and so I never really had the chance to speak it, although my listening skills improved greatly. It was only after I spent a year working in Milan that my language skills have improved greatly.
