Cafe Glocksee and Bei chez Heinz are not to be missed. Georgengarten for long walks or jogging, or one of the many lakes and canals in the city where one can spend a long summer day dazing are also highly recommended.

Housing
Type of housing: Flat sharing
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: The same place
Why?
The apartment is shared between ten people, many of whom are not native Germans, which gives it an interesting flair. The people living there were extremely friendly and still three years on, even though there has been some change in the composition of inhabitants, one can still feel at home there.

Personal comments
I had some luck in getting my particular apartment since a former inhabitant who was on an Erasmus scholarship in France was studying in the same faculty which I was entering, so I simply got to take over her room for the duration of our exchange. Others ended up on, more or less, completely international (i.e. non German) campuses. Consequently they had a hard time adjusting to the German culture and language. I would personally like to see the University do more to help the international student body integrate with the local students and culture.

Languages
Language of instruction: German
Was learning German a key decision factor?

Personal comments
In the beginning I had some trouble communicating in the local language. Thanks to my roommates, who were for the most part Germans at the time, my German improved day to day. That is to say, my informal German. The institutional and academic languages are somewhat more complicated, but by and by that also became easier.

Personal comments
I had some trouble with my Erasmus coordinator within the faculty which in turn led to some troubles with my academic assessment. Had it not been for that small problem I would probably give the University a `it was alright´.

The prizing in Iceland is much, much higher than it is in Germany. I also wanted to finance my own studies, so I cut back on some spending.

Overall
I wish I had known...
I wish I had known how the academic assessment works in The University of Hanover, then some stress would have been averted.

Final comments
Do not shy away from Hanover just because it is on the outside an ugly and grey industrial city. If one looks hard enough one can find its green corners and its vibrant culture scene. It is also at the crossroads between Hamburg, Berlin and Frankfurt, so traveling is quite easy.
