I wish I had known...
How far away the university was from the city centre and the fact that lectures start at 8h30. French students seem to put much more emphasis on work over social life compared to back home.

Personal recommendation
Take the DEFLE evening french classes and you'll meet people from all over the world. This will really enhance your social life. It has to be remembered that learning the language is teh primary reason for coming so learning it in a social environment is just as good as going to a lecture!

Final comments
It can take a while to settle in. For the first few months until Christmas I can't say I was completely happy and pretty much counted the days until I could go home. When I came back after Christmas it was great, everything was familiar and I really felt at home. It just can take time to find yor feet.

I chose to study abroad in France specifically for the opportunity to improve my french language skills. Otherwise, in every other case I would have chosen Spain!

I made some progress, I learned some words and expressions and I enjoyed living in a country with another language. But it was not difficult because, when I moved there, I already spoke French fluently and had been in France several times. I can understand that living in a country where you cannot communicate is difficult, specially with administrative matters. I was living in Holland for almost two years and the beginning was really hard because I had to ask help to my colleagues very often; opening a bank account, register in the City Hall, look for a doctor, I could do nothing without help. You can feel a bit apart but it's a nice challenge.
