I wish I had known...
Nothing that I can think of! My university prepared us well for going abroad and I did my own research before leaving.

Make sure you do the highest level for your ability otherwise you will be bored. If possible try and do the cours semestriels as it is more challenging than the rest.

By law in France, an ATM may not charge the user for withdrawing funds, regardless of which, and most importantly, where the user's bank is. The ATM is therefore a very rapid and effective means of withdrawing money quickly if this home bank does not charge too severly for using another bank's ATM.

Very good if you had zero French language experience, as I did. The curriculum is intense, but lays a very necessary foundation from which you will very quickly be able to build in the following semester.

If at all possible, live with French people and avoid people from your own country. Above all, don't be an expatriate, but rather be French. Living abroad is a lot like being a child again, learning new customs, new foods, new language, and it is important to not compare this experience with the rest of your life: this is a new life.

I wish I had more fully appreciated what an interesting challenge it is getting French office staff to do anything at all, ever. Even come in to work, say.

Great for academia: there are hundreds of experts in their respective fields. Lectures can be truly enlightening. Seminars are silly: they are too long (3 hours sometimes), resulting in too long being spent in the class - it's not profitable spending 6 hours in the same room for a double period! But it'll certainly look good on your CV, and the teachers know exactly what they're talking about. Especially the English faculty ones.

Travel whenever you can: your workload will be extensive if you're actually studying at the university (most of the people here seem not to have, having instead studied for the language course). The language course makes you practise your French, and does not require that you spend great amounts of time in the university; studying as an Erasmus student will give you a great amount of academic experience, you'll hone your essay technique, but you will have less time for other things.
