For students and the cheapest alcohol then Bar Celestain, Red Zone, Cubanitos (happy hour) and Electros are quite good. Restaurant Jaquevert has an excellent set menu and Tapalocas is fantastic for great cheap booze, gorgeous Tapas or both.

CROUS organise accomodation for you if you apply in advance, you should request a room in Van Dyck, and you should request to be off the ground floor if you are a girl just for security reasons.

I wish I had known...
You have to be very careful in Avignon. Its not always safe and you shouldnt be alone at night on your own at night, especially between 11pm and
3am.
You should bring bedding!

Final comments
Administration is a real chore but if you spend a couple of days a week in the first fortnight getting it done you will done. Dont open a bank account with Credit Lyonnais, Caisse D'Epargne are a good option.
