Not reallt; nothing is more satisfying than being dumped in a foreign country and surviving, and actually enjoying it.

Very large university. You would meet many other foreign student who are in the same predicament. Comforting atmosphere.

That simply living with a French host family is not always enough to make you part of it (as had happened in Holland). That in most cases you absolutely must force yourself onto them in order to forge a real relationship.

I think it was an excellent program. Tough, but you really got a taste of French university life, even though it was tailored to International students. And the professors were great.

I could probably only give the same tips as with every experience abroad, take advantage of your time as much as possible. every time you think of something you want to do, book it and go do it because suddenly you have 2 days left and no more time.

There is a great music festival called Les Transmusicales which is great--all kinds of music, everywhere. There is a film festival every year, though I forget what it is called. One of my favorite things was a storytelling festival (festival de contes) called "En Faim de Conte." This was just getting its start when I was there. That year, it was four nights long, with a different storyteller each night. It took place in an old church which had been converted into a theatre. The best of the storytellers was Alain LeGoff, a Breton from the coast. He's a short, stocky guy (a bit like Popeye), with a large, white moustache and a bright smile. He's great! If you are ever in France and see an advertisement for one of this man's shows, go see him.

I think I just wasn't used to paying for everything on my own. When at home or at the university in the states, everything was already paid for.

Make sure to try and take advatange of any student discounts (if you're a student of course!). Travel by train can be a lot cheaper if you buy a student travel membership in France.

There were some courses were I did not understand a single word because thy referred to lots of books, texts and authors I had never treated before. It took me 2 month to get into it. People always gave me "positive feedback" concerning my language level, I never felt in any way ashamed when talking with my german accent.

Take a bunch of money. Be under 26 :), I was not. Buy a Eurail pass so you can travel without spending tons of money. Research calling cards before you go, you may find better deals than the ones you can find there.
