I belief that I already spoke a pretty good French arriving in Rennes. But the real feeling for the language and the culture you can only get, while getting involved into the social life of the French people.

I figured out that by listening closely already you can make quick progress. Still you shouldn't be desperate if you don't understand everything on tv in the first few months. That is far more difficoult than just understanding your peer french friends.
