Here in Barcelona everybody speak katalan and spanish, but I dont speak catalan, just spansih, so then in the social situation, when I am alone whit one catalan, they are speaking spanish to me, but when they are 3-4 they start to speak catalan, I mean it is a big problem, but what can I do, I can not forbidden them to speak catalan, and they are always speking katalan whit theirs friends and family, so why will they change just becaouse I am whit them. but if I will be a little bit bad, it is a problem for them as well, becouse everybody speak catalan, but nobody speak english. What more, about my spanish ofcaouse my spanish is better now after a year here in Barcelona, but not so much as I wished. I mean it is 2 problem, the fisrt one is the cataln, the second one is that in the univerist I was studing economices, and not spansih, I have not ant problem to read a Micro littrature in spanish, or to understand the teacher in spansih, becaouse the vocabulary is alway the same, but I had not time to take a spansish couses, so then, my spansih grammar is still quite bad.

Try, no matter how hard it must look, to get along with local students. they seem pretty closed but that's because they think erasmus students don't even make the effort to know them. They are really nice people!

I took 4 courses: Marketing Internacional, Tecnicas Modernas de Ventas, Sociologia de la Comunicacion y Grupos a la Empresa and Teoria de la comunicacion Comercial. Marketing Internacional: a mess - there were 2 ways to be evaluated, one in which you had to complete many assessments throughout the course and a final term exam, and other which was just the exam. I wanted to choose the former, but i couldnt access the Course internet files for about 2 weeks so i failed to handle 4 assessments and couldnt choose the on going system anymore. So, as i was forced to choose the simple final exam option, i didnt feel estimulated to go to classes anymore, as presence is not required. Also, gotta say that the classes were pretty much of a mess, the teacher couldnt control the students and would be only speaking about cases, without explaining the fundamentals of international marketing. Deception much. Tecnicas Modernas de Ventas - good class, the teacher was very helpful and nice. The project we had to develop could have been a bit more oriented. Sociologia de la Com... - Awesome class, but u gotta speak a very good spanish to understand it. the teacher is so funny and smart and thinks completely out of the box. There arent many exchange students here, so u will probably be alone cause local students dont interact much. Teoria de la Comunicacion - good basic class of advertising. dont expect to learn on a deeper level though.

I dont like the system of exams worthing 100% of the mark - would have prefered to be evaluated throughout the semester, as happens at my home uni.

I wish I had known...
I wish I had taken care of housing before going there. The actual search took up about 3-4 weeks, which was sometimes very hard.

Personal recommendation
It's a good university. I have to admit the level is not as high as my home university. But with the (initial) language problems, I still had a big challenge to pass my exams. But I managed in the end. Most professors I had were very helpfull in helping out the foreign students.

Make sure you've arranged housing beforehand, if not, get there on time to make sure there's still enough time to arrange this. A useful webpage/institution: www.habitatgejove.es Despite the great social life in Barcelona, try to save some money for travelling Spain, as this country has a lot more beautiful places than just this city.

Studying in Barcelona is not a typical Spanish study abroad experience. The official language is Catalan, not Spanish. Although everyone can speak Spanish, this does not mean that they do or want to. I never really had any serious problems, it was just intimidating at first. The Catalan classes offered through the UB aren't too bad; just don't expect to be fluent by the end.
