I loved to learn spanish and to comunicate with people in the host university and in the city of barcelona. I also learned a little bit of Catalan, but i didn't choose this language for my clesses in the university. I prefered to have classes in Spanish.

Very interesting, some difficulties to understand the catalan. But people are friendly and when they see you're a foreigner they switch to castillan!

I went to Spain to learn Spanish and to learn about the country. I studied in Barcelona, so Catalan was everywhere I had some difficulty at times understanding what signs said. But pretty much everyone also spoke Spanish so I got along fine.

There is so much English spoken in Barcelona that students can easily spend an entire semester or year there without learning much Spanish at all. You have to make an active effort to meet locals and to immerse yourself in local culture.

It was an amazing transition from understanding readily yet being unable to speak, to understanding and speaking with ease. Most people were really generous with help and understanding of the constant struggle and cultural differences.

Always bear in mind that both Catalan and Spanish (and even English to a certain extent) all share in the linguistic situation of Catalonia.
