Housing
Type of housing: A room exchange
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: A room exchange
Why?
Where you have a room like most other international students, you get to meet a lot of people of very different culture and ways of life than yours, thereby you get to appreciate and learn to live with other people and respect them for their believes and ways of life.It helps you to have a wider perspective towards life.

I think the problem is that Leiden is a small city with a high population of students, and as such accomodation costs are a bit expensive especially for international students. I think if there were on campus accomodations it will be a bit better.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
It provides enough silence and concentration to study. It develops independency in self-cooking, house-keeping and to be more responsible.

It was done by the University through SLS wonen, a private agency for seeking housing. They charge 75$ which is slightly high, however, students new to the city find it convienient to avail the facility. The housing is carpeted and spacious with enough ventilation and good ambience. Caretaker at the apartment is helpful giving infos on the city and for safety.

Language was the factor that made me decide to choose studying in The Netherlands. Because eventhough the local people speak Dutch, but the instruction language we use in the class is English which was the language I already spoke before I came to The Netherlands. Nonetheless, I took a Dutch course for 3 months in Indonesia before I came to The Netherlands, just to prepare my self to have a basic understanding of the local language in an everyday interaction, i.e. go to local market, etc.

Personal spending habits
I spent more on travel because I travelled throughout Europe during the year and I usually don't travel when in California. I had more phone bills because I would have to call long distance in order to speak to my friends and family. I spent more on Nightlife because I generally went out more in the Netherlands than I do in California.

Personal comments
One doesn't spend that much in text books because the professor just assigns readings that needs to be photocopied for class.

Communication was not a problem in the university environment because people are aware of the fact that there are a lot of international students around so as soon as they realise this, they speak english to you, i think they are quite willing to help. In the community as well it is a bit easy at least you can cope with the things and places you need to go.I think generally people are willing to help when they realise you don't speak the local language.

Master Psychology at Leiden University

Netherlands,
Psychology and Behavioural Sciences, 2023
Overall
The University itself seems quite organized and informs very often and on time about recent news. Especially as an international student I always felt welcomed and it is not a problem if you canīt speak Dutch, every employee is very friendly and can switch to English immediately.

Concerning my track Social and Organisational Psychology, I want to say that there is a bigger focus on Social Psychology, which is in my opinion good to know beforehand.
