The best year of my life was my Master of Laws
anonymous
Finland, Graduate
Law, 2019
Overall
University is meant to be the best years of your life, and while I didn't find that in my undergraduate year at Warwick University, I most certainly found that in Edinburgh. Not only is the historical city beautiful all year round, but the university itself is something to admire. I joined Edinburgh law school in 2018 and encountered some of the most learned professors, who were all very much available and willing to provide help if needed. The student help centre was equally as helpful, especially for the international students. The library was one of the most visited place on campus, and was open 24/7 during assignment or exam time. The actual Master of Laws course itself was highly interesting, especially given I was allowed to design my General Law Course based upon what subjects caught my eye the most. In total, fantastic experience and I would recommend it to anyone. Plus, the Scottish accent is most charming!

Overall
There is the possibility to study Danish, Swedish or Norwegian language at the University. There is also a good range of cultural courses to take, especially in the final year including history, literature and translation courses. The teachers are generally knowledgeable in their fields and helpful in giving advice and help in the languages and other fields of study.

Edinburgh is a beautiful city but be prepared for long, dark and windy winters where you are basically confined home. Setting up a bank account requires a lot of effort and is completely useless. A money transfer is more expensive than wihdrawing money with you own card. Try to avoid seeing a doctor there. Try to travel as much as possible. Loch Ness is generally considered a must but St Andrews and the Highlands are also worth a visit. Glasgow is popluar for shopping but personally I did not like it at all.

During the whole year I followed Honours Courses in English. I also had to attend tutorials during which I had to speak in front of the rest of the group (presentations, exercises to solve...). Reading all the books they asked us to read, writing essays in English, taking the same final exams as the rest of the local students, forced and helped me to improve my English greatly. Thanks to this experience I have acquired a sound grasp of the Economic English vocabulary. Going out with Scottish and international friends and sharing a flat with three other international students (Swedish, Dutch and American)was a very good way to improve my everyday knowledge of the English vocabulary.

Buy waterproof clothing cos it rains a lot and it's too windy for an umbrella most of the time.

Even though the year was great, I'm disappointed that my home university won't give me credit for most of the courses I took, so that academically I "wasted" a year. Personally, it was the best thing I could have done and I would do it again in a New York minute!!!!

I wish I had known...
I wish I had known it would be so hard to go back to find work. It is hard to apply for a work visa and I can not seem to find any information on how to get back. I had the most wonderful experience of my life and would love to work and live in another country in the future.

Personal recommendation
The University is wonderful and full of knowledge. If I had one personal recommendation it would be to upgrade the technology. It was hard to log on and off of the internet and the best PC I could find had Windows 95 on an old operating system. Students need the world at their fingertips.

While living in Edinburgh and attending the University I found an internship. I worked at the Royal Bank of Scotland during my time and received and experience I will never forget. The internship entailed working with their international customers and researching other companies through the Business Balanced Scorecard.
