I really enjoyed a bar/pub located downtown which had a free scene for musicians. It was an upstairs place but I can't remember the name... Sorry!

Final comments
People are nice and the capital of Iowa is not too far. However, Des Moines is also a kind of little city. Its Art Museum is really really great! You have to visit it and its garden!

The exchange with my French school was including the school fees but the US administration counted first! I couldn't pay two school: one in france and one in USA... They did a mistake!
