Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
The apartment I was staying in was pretty much 'on campus' (Oxford's colleges are spread throughout the city): it was right across from Magdalen college, the college I was affiliated with during my stay in the UK. I was very much a part of the college social and academic scene -- I ate in the college dining hall, joined the rowing team, hung out in the JCR, among other things -- but I always wondered what it would be like to actually live in the dorms. I suppose, then, I'd be looking for an experience different from the one I already had.

The apartment I stayed in with the other Stanford students was fabulous. It was well situated, well furnished (my room was adorable, besides being comfortable and warm) and well run. We were served tea and pastries everyday at 4 on the dot by Pat, our 'house mum'. The staff was so wonderful.

Personal spending habits
Inevitably, things are more expensive in England. Also, there were often times when we tired of the St. Anne's College dining hall, and wished to stretch our wings. Typically, going out is not cheap; but in such an active environment, it's unavoidable. We all just accepted having to spend more money, for the most part, and it became a non-issue after we had been in residence a few weeks.

Overall, Nightlife, Travel, Telephone, Food:
was more expensive than at home.
Housing:
was the same price as at home.
Accessibility of student needs
Second-hand household items
Personal comments
There are often opportunities to take long weekends to travel outside of England. If you wish to do this, plan ahead so that you can budget accordingly. Do not always try to translate pounds into dollars in order to get a deal-- you must accept the fact that you will pay more in pounds. If you wish to buy day-to-day items and books, do so in Oxford and not in London, where things are more expensive.

Why?
Oxford is absolutely beautiful and the dorms are more than accommodating, particularly in comparison to an American university's on campus accommodations. I lived right in University College with a view that overlooked the library and could also hear the people gathering at the beer cellar bellow my room. I had a sitting room and smaller bedroom which included a sink. Additionally, Oxford provided a cleaning and turn over service which straighted our rooms every morning. Also, the campus feels extremely safe.

Personal comments
The house is more than enough for anyone, particularly an American student. Many of my friends, including myself, that lived in University College had a sitting room and a bedroom. The staff at Oxford takes care of cleaning the rooms.
