“My experience at Oxford University”
Georgia B
United Kingdom, Undergraduate
Language, 2022
Overall
My experience thus far studying French and Beginner's Russian has proved to be very stimulating and enjoyable. Having being submerged into the trials of learning Russian from scratch whilst wrestling with Medieval French literature I have found the wonderful architecture and beautiful scenery of Oxford to really compliment my university experience. The warm community spirit entrenched within the Queen's college culture also has helped me really embrace my first year studying at Oxford University.

Pros
Beautiful scenery, cultural hub, good nightlife, fun societies and varied activities, excellent teaching
Cons
The course is rather intense and the short terms sometimes mean you don't feel you have long enough to enjoy your term time away from home.

I wish I had known...
To bring sneakers or better shoes-- the guidebooks said that the Brits didn't wear jeans and sneaks much, so I didn't bring them. My feet hurt..... Also, who knew they rode so many bicycles?

Go! Don't let anything/one scare you off if you really want it. I went in the year of Mad Cow, etc. So we couldn't hike- we found more than enough other things to do.

(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
If you are academically motivated and independent, you will thrive at Oxford. Otherwise, it can be a difficult transition from a structured American university as the classes and lectures are not as frequent and study is done independenly.

“Four fantastic years”
Lucasta B
Belgium, Undergraduate
Language, 2019
Overall
The course offers a good degree of flexibility, with some compulsory modules in translation and composition. The teaching quality is excellent and the campus facilities are good, if quite old-fashioned.
The major downside is the Year Abroad, where students are given very little meaningful help and support and essentially left to fend for themselves for a year. Unlike other universities, Erasmus exchanges are not really encouraged, even though this would have been a good option for many students.

“Intensive, immersive educational experience”
Pratyush G
United Kingdom,
Literature, 2025
Overall
The education at the University of Oxford corresponds to its level of international esteem to a considerable extent, and this materialises particularly in the heavy workload and rapid succession of content. Its adherence to tradition, both academically and culturally, provides a unique university experience and facilitates the transition between school and the working world.

Careers
The university does have a careers system which does offer both internship/job opportunities for undergraduates and post-graduates. There are also numerous careers fairs and advisory centres for the students.

Pros
The immersive tutorial experience which provides high-quality one-on-one insight on the course, between tutor and student.
Cons
The workload and intensity is high, which is often overwhelming and unrealistic. This can be demoralising and conducive of a toxic working outlook and environment.
