if you want to pay the housing fee via the internet you have to pay a convenience fee of 60$(!) -- alternatives are to pay the large amount in cash or in installments

there was no shock. it might have been good to have known some things but it wasn't a bad experience to find out about them on one's own

In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
if you are an international student try to get a room on the CGC-floor (Carolina Global Community) in South Quad. You live with international and American students, they organize trips and events and it's just great.
If you like to experience the South of America (laid-back, Southern friendliness and hospitality, but also conservativism and sometimes narrow-mindedness) it's the right university for you.

Met people from other countries
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies & career
Final comments
All in all: IT WAS GREAT!
seize the chance to travel around, you will probably never get this possibility again (at least not under these circumstances)
don't take too many courses at school! very important. you're there to experience sth. new and see everything, so don't just "waste" your time on studying 24/7
