Worst schooling experience
Louisa
Australia, Undergraduate
, 2024
Overall
I am a history major and the only good thing I can say for this school is that the history and classics departments are amazing. The teaching staff are great, the content is interesting, everything is good. The school as a whOLE though, is just awful. There is absolutely no regard for their domestic students, or student experience in general. The admin staff don't listen to any instructions you give them, I have had people go into my degree plan and just move units around and remove things they shouldn't without asking me. The admin staff also do not read any forms you submit properly, and I have heard multiple accounts of this. I am constantly in contact with them trying to get things fixed, with at least a days wait in between responses. It takes weeks to get anything done.

The totally unregulated way that UTAS structures their degrees leaves so much room for error. I am currently having to study a unit at another university because of an internal error at UTAS, and their inability to compensate. Their software for planning your degree is confusing and easy to make mistakes in (as I did) and there is no way out once you make mistakes.

I would never recommend this school to anyone, if you are considering moving to Tasmania to study, DON'T. I fully belueve that (after being involved two other degrees in very different study areas) I am a part of the best-managed and most supportive department at the school, and I still have constant issues witht he institution itself. Seriously consider going elsewhere, I would if I could.

unclear replies by loraine from the accounts department
Shaz

Overall
I did a withdrawal for the first unit and then did a second withdrawal for another unit within the first week, when I spoke to loraine( from UTAS accounts) via email she couldn’t give me accurate info. Apparently, after countless emails later she told me the reason why my second refund for a study unit wasn’t processed till 3/8 was because they had close down my request for refund of the study unit because I hadn’t indicated on the online form it was for the second unit.
What a load of rubbish, I had withdraw from the unit on the page within 2 days of submitting that form.
UTAS accounts finance department messed up, and no word of apology just a very condescending email reply from loraine, and this own time(2 weeks have passed) I have been waiting on the unit refund money to get back to me. I have decided I’ll not enrol in utas next year because of this.

Worst way to study arts
Anna
Australia, Undergraduate

Overall
I am so close to dropping out of my degree because my experience has been so bad. I had a friend who took it that step further and quit university.

I am a fine arts student, and for some reason, I am being taught in the most uncreative, frustrating ways possible.

MyLo, the online learning platform, is so disorganised and frustrating to use.

Teachers don't reply to emails. And then email the whole class about a different topic later the same day.

Only positives are the buildings are historical and col, and the office staff are very polite and friendly.
