I had stayed in a residence called 'Columbia Lake Village' which is espeacilly for exchange student and upper-year canadian student for 8 months, and had lived off-campus for 4 months. The cost is a bit higher than market price, but the residence, CLV, offered a very nice garden, clean housing and great opportunity to make social connection. CLV runned its own programs such as Holloween party, BBQ party and niagara trip etc, so that people could actually have a chance to get to know each other.

Must shop around for relatively cheap things. Ask people about where to get what. Get to know organizations like salvation army, food banks etc when the going gets though.
