A well-respected university that is small enough to really get involved. They LOVE their international students!

I would definitely recommend Uppsala to anyone. I had been to Sweden before so I knew what to expect. I had one of the best experiences of my life, and I am going to try my hardest to live there! Use Ryanair for dirt cheap trips around Europe via London/stansted. Work at student nations (in the pubs)-- lets you get involved and meet the swedes.

Be careful with baggage: it can be very expensive to travel with heavy suitcases!

If you want to really experience student life in Uppsala, you must join Nations' activities, which enable you to meet Swedish students (who are usually very shy)and enter local culture

Travelling can be very cheap in Sweden, since students usually have the opportunity of paying less. To enjoy any Welfare advantage (in particuar health assistance)it's importance to get residence permit.

Course recommendations
Immunology is supposed to be pretty good. I took Biophysical chemistry MN1(supposed to be the hardest course, but it's not so bad. The class was very small, so I got to know many locals). Project work is an excellent experiment, just make sure you'll get along with your supervisor.

Some of the courses were somewhat unorganized. They usually have several lecturers, so I suppose it can get quite difficult to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Course recommendations
Courses are very interactive (at least by Swiss standards), professors and Swedish students are very welcoming towards internationals. Courses are easy to pass as long as you participate in group projects and seminars, but coming home with above average grades is definately an effort.

Be attentive to course descriptions, and refer to anyone who has already taken the course for advice. In my experience a lot of the courses were too similar.

The best part of Uppsala is the social life. There is ALWAYS something happening. Student clubs are from Tuesday all the way through Saturday night. It does get a bit expensive, especially if you go out 3+ times a week! There are always parties in Flogsta as well, pretty much every night. The other great thing is the travel opportunities. You will have plenty of time to travel all over northern Europe: in one year I was able to see Norway (2x), pretty much all of Sweden, Denmark (2x), Estonia, Lithuania, Germany and Russia. Do NOT miss out on a chance to see Lappland, especially the part in Norway. Do NOT miss out on the weekend cruises to Tallinn or Riga, which can cost as little as 3€ per person!! Choose Norway over Sweden or Finland for travel, it has much more to offer.

In most courses, you study one subject intensely for several weeks and then have an exam, before moving on to the next course. This was a very different type of assessment to what I was used, and took a bit of getting used to. No room for cramming before exams. It was necessary to keep up with the readings and class notes all of the time.
