Personal spending habits
If you are used to eat French food, (even cooking yourself) that will definitely cost you more in the US! I spent more in pubs in the US than at home where i mostly used to get free drinks in parties...
Travel in the US costed me too: New Orleans, NYC, Florida, SC... (but transportation costs are cheaper compared with home tho).

I had a good TOEFL score to be able to go study in the US. However my vocabulary and accent were not that great. During the first semester, i mostly strenghtened my reading and comprehension skills. During the last one my accent and wording drastically improved, specially because of the interaction with other students outside classes.

Overall
I wish I had known...
I was really well prepared because i got a bunch of info from alumni who went there. I had also the chance to find an American roommate (through Internet) before getting there. That helped me a lot: he found the appartment and brought his furnitures!

I recommend Sygma Phi Epsylon parties! Sygma Mu & Sygma Nu are also great.
Don't miss the pledge parties ;)
Off campus, Brew Ha Ha's and Burke Street pubs are fun.
Remember that if you make good friends you will have fun anywhere anyway!

Personal comments
Graduate students can't live on campus. I had an American and a German roommate and had wonderful time with them and other friends we invited over. However if i had studied in WFU as an undergrad, i would have loved to join a fraternity.
