I wish I had known...
I wish I had known about the unsettled state of University/teaching staff relations. After the strike was suggested it bacame apparant that there was a history of disputes, which was well known in the local community.

Make sure there is no talk of a strike. If there is do your best to carry on the work, but don't miss the opportunity to get out and enjoy yourself on Toronto or Canada because its a wonderful place to be.

Get involved in as many campus activities as possible. It's not as central to the city as may first appear so make the most of the social events/sports on campus and with the friends made enjoy the city (many of the campus bars were shut Friday-Sunday!!).

if you decide not to live on campus I would suggest you start looking for a place to stay rather early, just to make sure everything works out fine

chose your courses carefully, you have to decide what it is you expect from your exchange semester, make sure you don't get overwhelmed with the work load of the courses and enjoy and embrace all the other important experiences apart from university

Montreal and Quebec City are a MUST! As mentioned, travel in groups - you get to know exchange students from other countries and make friends for life.

It is better to live downtown and share a flat with some friends...But maybe not the first year because life on campus is great to meet people

Well don't forget that Toronto is a pretty cold city...The winter is very long...But you can also enjoy it (ice-skating, skiing...)
