“Good University Environment, Economics Programme to improve”
Giulio S
Luxembourg, Graduate
Economics, 2020
Overall
The Freiburg University environment is stimulating and helpful. It gives the chance to meet many international students, and access to several opportunities to adjust the focus of the studies (you can access courses from other neighboring universities, Erasmus, ecc.)
The Economics Programme is absolutely valid, although the quality of teaching has been lowering in the past years. The setup of the studies is pretty standard. However, it has a strong academic orientation and as such it does not provide a lot of support when it comes to jump into the job market

It may be less comfortable and you may have less personal space, but do try to see whether you can live with some GERMAN students or a family - at least for a while.

Get there at least a couple of working week days in advance. Good to find your bearings, sort out money etc. Also, if for any reason you're starting the course late, check check CHECK there will still be a room available and they won't have given it to somebody else - as happened with me...! I turned up to find someone elses jeans and shoes all over the room...

Housing
Type of housing: Student rooms off campus
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
Living with a family gives you the opportunity to get more involved in the culture and get a better grasp on the language.

I lived in student housing and shared a two bathrooms and one shower with three other students. I shared a kitchen with seven other students, four which were German and three which were also exchange students. The cleanliness of the housing depends, of course, on who you are living with. Our kitchen was disguisting, but that was because no one would take care of it. The laundry facilities were ok, but it was annoying because you had to use laundry tokens, which could only be purchased between 4 and 5. But as long as you have good roommates you can have a great experience!

At the University there are many language courses, that are not expensive. Profit the opportunity to learn languages!

The most comfortable to get there is take train from Basel (CH), but also from Stuttgart or even Frankfurt the connection is ok. If you want to spare some money there are always regional-tickets (around 23eur) or weekend-tickets (28eur), which are valid for 5 people. Travelling together can be fun and much cheaper:). Good coffee in MichelAngelo next to the UB. Buy or bring a bicycle, you will need it, but be careful, because very often bicycles are stolen.

I should have gone and stayed there two years instead of one. I had the chance to go there my fourth and fifth year of my law degree and I went there only for the fifth year.

It is a very good university to study law -the best of Germany-, you can take specialised courses which are really affordable at the Studentenwerk and the relationship between students and teachers is really good.
