Registration for health cover in Germany, go to the AOK in Moltkestrasse before you register at the uni and get your papers, this costs you nothing with an E128 form. I didn't know that I needed to have this for registration and the guy at the registration office was pretty rude to me and sent me to the AOK and told me to come back the next day.

Get a "Bahncard" half price trains throughout Germany. In Italy use a Chilometrico Ticket, very cheap and you can travel for miles!

Very strongly! This University can cater to whatever your needs are. If you want to study and really learn, there are plenty of resources and ways to accomplish this. If you want to slack and have fun, there are plenty of ways to accomplish this too!

Housing
Type of housing: University Hall
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Where I am
Why?
Although there was a lack of cooking facilities in the hall I was in, the overall atmosphere of the area was superb. Also, the location next to all other students helped a lot.

Personal comments
In general, the accomodation is very good, especially on the Studentensiedlung am Seepark, where most students live. However, there are a few things, such as the lack of good cooking facilities in Europa Haus (the hall resserved for foreign students, which could be improved. Overall, very good.

I spent a wonderful year there, but it depends on several factor: how long you stay, where you live and your room-mates.

Freiburg is ideally placed to explore Western and central Europe, being on the borders of France and Switzerland, so travel is the best thing one can do. In Freiburg itself, the nightlife is good although not very varied. Apart from flash bars and Rock clubs there is not much. Dance clubs, and more alternative nights tned to be few and far between. There are plenty of cinemas around though, and also many which show the original english versions of current films. The University film club is also very good on this front, often only being a few weeks out with the new releases. For a drink try Gre Cafe, or Schlappen, service is friendly and good. If you're up for more of a night of it, then stay on the Studentensiedlung, and go to the Stusie Bar, or Rio Bar, which often stay open until 4 or 5 in the morning. Also v. cheap, and full of students.

Nothing comes to mind.. Knowing about the 'Pfand' would have saved some embarrasment at the start, but that's all part of the experience!

There are many ways to get to Frankfurt depending where you are coming from. Closest airports are (in no particular order) Stuttgart, Strasbourg, Basel, Karlsruhe and Frankfurt. There are many low cost airlines flying to these airports. In my own experience coming from Ireland by far the cheapest and quickest way is Dublin-Frankfurt with aer lingus, and then the ICE train direct from the airport to Freiburg.
