Alojamiento
Tipo de alojamiento: Not technically ON campus but university housing
Organizado por: Universidad de intercambio
Si volviera, eligiría: Piso o apartamento
¿Por qué?
It would allow for more freedom... the guards can be a little strict sometimes, plus housing was so cheap off campus. I could have had my own bathroom... But living in the dorms allows you to get to know other people a LOT better

It depends on what you like... if you don't mind dorm style bathrooms and roommates who stay up all night, then its great. You get to know other kids really well, but there is a lack of privacy. If you don't like cats, you might not like the dorm because there are lots of "adopted" dorm cats that live in the lobby. The guards can be strict with females sometimes, but its Egypt!

Si lo hubiera sabido...
I was well acquainted with the Arab world because I had lived in Syria the year before, so Egypt did not represent a big change for me.

Recomendación personal
I studied two different things at American University in Cairo. First, I was at the Arabic Language Insitute (ALI) studying Arabic for a year. I loved their method of teaching Arabic as a second language and most professors are absolutely great.
During the summer, I took two courses in Economics (Micro and Macro) while I have no complaints about professors, I do have a lot to say regarding AMerican University administration. The application process was a mess, nobody seemed to be responsible for anything, long lines would form at the registration office, and I almost missed important deadlines because I was misinformed. Whoever is going to take classes at AUC, please make sure that that you start all application process with enough lenght of time because the university is pretty caothic internally.

My roommate didn't speak english so this was the best factor in helping me learn Arabic. We watched Soap opera and cartoons in Arabic and she would try to explain. I helped her with her english and she with my arabic. Also as a girl you tend to pick up little things automatically when you date some one from the area. And as a girl its not hard to get involved with the male population in the area. So 3 days after I arrived I found myself dating one of the guys in the club I had joined. were still great friends.

the administration doesn't take students or parents feedback regarding any significant topic into consideration. very authoritarian leadership, and because of that everything is going downhill.

Some of the nicest places to go to at night include La Bodega, Club 35, Cairo Jazz Club, and Latex at the Nile Hilton. During the day it is nice to just spend some time at cafes such as Tabasco,L'Aroma, and Cilantro. Among the other things that I would recommend are visiting the pyramids and doing some site seeing whenever possible as there are so many interesting things to see due to the history of the country.
