Overall the cost of living in Wuerzburg is significantly lower than in Dublin (it wouldn't be hard!). I spent more on telephone charges due to calls to home and I spent more on travel because I travelled a lot more than I would at home.

If you plan on travelling a lot, get a Bahncard. It costs €50/100, depending on which you go for, but it can end up saving you quite a lot if you travel by train. Look out for special offers on the Deutsche Bahn website, up to 5 people can travel anywhere within Germany by train on a "Happy Weekend ticket" for a quite a low price. There are also similar tickets for within each Bundesland, so its worth researching your journeys a bit. There are also Mitfahrgelengheit, which is essentially organised hitch-hiking.

I spent a lot on travel as I wanted to make the most of this opportunity to see as much of Germany as I could. Wuerzburg has reasonably low living costs so this was less expensive.

I was just surprised by the initial outlay. I could only take 25 kilos of stuff on the plane with me so had to buy all my plates and saucepans and everything once I got there. Thankfully my flatmates had lots of stuff (like a hoover, not provided in German halls) and they let me borrow everything I needed.

I sent more on travel because I wanted to see a bit of the country while I was there, so every free weekend was spent being a tourist; something I just wouldn't do at home! My telephone bills home were legendary as I often talked to friends and family at home and rung too many German mobiles too! Food and housing was considerably cheaper - had a shock when I got home!!

The college that i go at home is very small compared to this small German city. Another reason is that i dont have a car in the USA while in Germany everything is connected by railways.
