The telephone bills were charged through the university, the option of choosing a phone service provider was not there. Hence the phone bills were running very high. The dormitory expenses were much higher than my home university. I also did more travelling to other nearby cities. Also not to mention the exchange rate on the Canadian dollar.

Eating out was more expensive that I had originally calculated. Renting a small fridge is a good idea, to store food from the grocery store. This will save you money in the long run.

Personal spending habits
Even though the rent was moderate compared with bigger U.S. cities, it was higher than in the student shares in which I had been living in Germany. Travel was more expensive because I had a used car for part of my stay - which I never needed at home in a big German city. Except for the car, local travel was inexpensive (local buses).

High fees for having money transferred from home account to local account in the States. It is recommendable to ask one's bank about partnerships with banks in the U.S. which may waive fees.
