I wish I had known...
No!!! It's no fun to know what you are going to experience. Just the unexpected is the beauty of an exchange!

Good university, classes were fine. Accomodation was perfect and forces you to meet many people. Business department is very small and there are not many courses to choose from.

My stay in Canada was one big success! I love it and want to advice any student to go abroad. It's definately worth it. The fact that you meet so many new people from all over the world is the best experience I have here. If you stay at Carleton University in Ottawa you have the opportunity to see many things outside Ottawa. Tip: Go by car. Hiring a car is not that expensive and gas is way cheaper compared to Europe. Especially, when you go with a group of four persons, hiring a car is the best solution. This country is huge, and the distances between 'highlight' are pretty big. Having a car at that time is very convenient.

I wish I had known...
Quite a number of particularities about the North-American Educational System. It is totally different from the one I was accustomed to, and it took me more than a year (three academic terms) to become confident I was correct in my actions and behaviour, with my colleagues and professors.

I loved it but I'm not sure everybody would.

Orientation for int'l students is certainly a great idea. However, I recommend that it is carried out on a smaller scale, by the department that is to host the student in question, familiarizing him/her with the special requirements of that particular program/dept.

Research, research, research well in advance, before stepping foot on the "new" territory.

Main source of funding:
Family
Other sources of funding:
Personal savings
Government assistance
An ERASMUS grant
Work opportunities:

Personal spending habits
The campus rent was almost double of Rotterdam. Beer is quite expensive when going out. On top of that you need to tip between 10-15%.

Nightlife, Housing, Overall:
was more expensive than at home.
Travel, Food:
was the same price as at home.
Telephone:
was less expensive than at home.
Accessibility of student needs
Second-hand household items
Personal comments
Cook for yourself, don't go into a mealplan. Besides the quality of the meals served in the cafetaria, the price also lacks reasonability.

One of the best places to go is the Mercury Lounge. Love to be there. Especially on thursday you have to go to either the factory or the liquor dome. Pubs on campus are ok, but not amazing. Good for a beer and some social talks

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: off-campus
Why?
Because of the more intensive life with the inhabitants of the country and a little more privacy

I wish I had known...
I wish I already knew Spanish, but my Spanish is improving already because of a large amount of Spanish-speaking people on campus.

If you are oriented on the left wing of politics or want to experience a left wing university, come to Carleton. This university is famous for its programs in Political Science and International Affairs (development theories).

If you fly in to Canada, book a flight to Montreal and buy your own bus ticket. It will save you a couple of hundred dollars.
