My Experience as an International Masters (Graduate Degree) student; academically and non-academically
Rohit M
India, Graduate
, 2008
Overall
Central Michigan University is located in Mt. Pleasant, MI, which is approximately 160 miles (300 kms) from Detroit, the main city of Michigan. Mt. Pleasant is a small university town with a university campus of around 650 acres. Central Michigan University, also known as CMU, offers variety of undergrad, graduate and doctoral programs. My program was Master Of science in information Systems with specialization in SAP ERP. and was under the 'business school' which offers business programs at the undergraduate and graduate level and an MBA program with specializations. My program was a 30 credit hour program with additional foundation courses for those who didn't have sufficient business background. The program was and is open to students who have undergraduate degree in IT/Computer related degrees and also to those without IT/Computer related major. The class size was approximately 1:20 student average for each course.
I was offered a 'Graduate Research Assistanceship' for 5 hours a week where I had to work under my professor helping in her research. This GA started in my second semester and continued till the end of my program. This was an excellent opportunity to earn experience and helped me to offset my tuition fees to a considerable extent. To be honest, I was bit lazy in finding a suitable 'Graduate Assiatanceship'; if I would have planned properly, i could have got GA of 10 hours or even more from my department or even from other departments where my tuition fee would have reduced further as the university pays for either one/two/three courses too depending on the hours i get the GA.
My sincere suggestion to those planning to study at the Masters level specifically; try getting very good GRE/GMAT and English test scores, apply early, talk with the professors and try to get atleast 5 hr GA on I-20 (i.e even before landing in the US).

Apart from the Business school, CMU offers programs in other areas like Engineering, Education, Liberal Arts, Administration, Health Sciences, now Medicine and more.

Careers
Yes, the university has 2 big 'career fairs' ' one in fall semester and other in spring semester where approximately 100 companies come on campus. This is the best time to exhibit your skills, make contacts and even secure internship and job opportunities.

To prepare, the university has a career center where you can know more about various opportunities, avenues or even companies which mostly visit the campus every year. One can avail of services like counselling which is both , free and paid which helps you to get exposed to US style techniques, interviews, resume preparation and more.

Pros
The university is famous for 'Education' related degrees; but even other departments and programs have lot to offer.
Cons
When i was a student in 2006-2008, the university was not famous amongst many international students like other universities. Current situation might be different

Unfortunately for night life I prefer libraries and books, so can't tell much about this side of city. But it has some bars and dance places, one big casino (pride of neighborhood), movie theater, and most of all - people willing to spend time out and socialize

Personal spending habits
Food is extremely expensive in comparison with Holland. Didnt go out that often. Had the opportunity to travel with an American who had his own car (saved a lot of money for renting).

Make study work more of student's own responsibility. Make business courses more challenging. I didnt like I had to reproduce what I just studied,

Had really a good time, although Mount Pleasant and area around is pretty boring. I met a lot of nice people, and hung around with them a lot. Travelled my last four weeks of my stay to West and East Coast and that was awesome. Academic experience wasnt that good; however, that really depends on your courses, professor, and department. I'd recommend everyone to take English courses at English Language Institute if language skills need improvement and you are willing to improve!

I wish I had known...
Everything comes in the process of doing it. Getting new experience and knowledge, developing myself was the reason to come here. No matter as much would I know before coming here I would find gaps in my knowledge.
