I wish I had known...
Due to mistakes in my home country/university I had to deal with several problems on my own. Make sure your home university provides you with the right information. Besides that: "Don't leave your valuables unattended"

Keep on smiling. Sometimes you might think something goes to slow (visa extention) But just keep cool and make contact with the employees at the Bureau of Immigration and Deportation.
Don't get fooled by taxidrivers, who think you are a stupid tourist. Ask if they can start the metre (30 pesos - 2005).

Getting around is easy once you get accustomed to the routes in and around town. Know what 'jeepneys' to take to your various destinations and travelling won't be difficult, not to mention very cheap! A metro train runs quite near the university. Take this when traffic becomes a killer, which it usually is during rush hour. If you drive, be wary of the commuter vehicles as they are likely to stop to either pick up or disembark passengers without warning. Food is no problem. Many fastfood, and non-fastfood restaurants are abound. Don't drink from the tap without boiling it first. People are generally friendly. Don't be afraid to put on a smile. :)
