Why?
Through living with a host famlily you are forced to converse in Spanish. In addition you learn abut subtle cultural differences that are not always apparent through classroom instruction.

I was lucky in that the host families I lived with were wonderful people, the woman of the house even insisted upon being called 'la madre'.

I think that this is about the best way to be able to absorb the culture and get a real day-to-day feel for the language. Not to mention homecooked meals!!
