I wish I had known...
Some more information from the school about the preparation work that I would need, in other words more information about what the school was NOT going to help us with. Having comenfrom a very good university in the USA I assumed conditions would be more or les the same her in my host school.

In my opinion:
Stay home.
Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
To expand my selection above: This school is not the BEST option available, but because of my economic resources it was one of my options and in the end my selection. The program is still young and they are trying to build from practicaly zero. I must sya the program is OK, but if you have another choice go there first. I hope my comments do not hurt my chances, but I believe I must be honest in answering your questions.

Learn German before coming to Germany.
Take the chance to know other countries in Europe, travelling from Germany is very practical.
Bring lots of goodies from home, you will miss them.

No. It's part of the experience, not knowing what you're getting yourself into. It's a great feeling once you have achieved your goals.

This university is a serious and a hard one. It has very good teachers, very good learning material in the field of electrical/electronical/mechanical engineering, very good test laboratories, with cutting-edge hardware and software and most of all, the learning environment is cool. It is very close to Stuttgart and the staff that welcomes you and treats you during your stay are very nice people.

If you are looking to learn german, get to know new people from other countries, specially german guys and girls, learn a lot in the field of mechanical/electrical/electronical engineering in one of the best Fachhochschules in the country, and also have fun and do a little partying, you should come to Esslingen.

Not nearly as rigorous as courses at my home university in the US...but I did love my 4 day weekends (no class on Fri or Mon)...more field trips...and let us drive the Porche not just ride in it!!!
